A friendly, step-by-step walkthrough to set up Ledger Live, safely log in, and manage your crypto with confidence. This guide highlights security best practices, first-time setup, and tips for troubleshooting.
Make sure you have: a Ledger hardware device (Nano S Plus, Nano X, or other supported model), a computer or phone with a USB port or Bluetooth (for Nano X), and a secure place to write your recovery phrase. Never share your recovery phrase — Ledger support will never ask for it.
Download Ledger Live from the official Ledger website and install the application for your operating system (Windows, macOS, Linux) or mobile store (iOS, Android). Always verify you’re on the correct site and check the browser URL for the official domain.
Tip: Use a bookmark for the official Ledger website and never download from third-party sites.
When you power on the device for the first time, choose to set up as new device. You’ll be prompted to choose a PIN — a 4 to 8 digit code. Choose a PIN you can remember but others cannot guess. The device will then display a 24-word recovery phrase (some models allow 12 or 24). Write this down exactly and keep it offline and hidden.
Open Ledger Live, choose Get started, follow the prompts for your device model, and allow the app to detect your hardware. On the device confirm any prompts. Ledger Live will then synchronize and allow you to add cryptocurrency accounts.
In Ledger Live go to Manager to install blockchain-specific apps (Bitcoin, Ethereum, etc.) on your device. Then use Add account to create software accounts inside Ledger Live. This does not expose private keys — keys stay on your device.
To receive, select an account, click Receive, and verify the address displayed in Ledger Live matches the one shown on your device screen. Always verify on the hardware device itself. For sending, create a transaction in Ledger Live and confirm the details on the device before approving.
If Ledger Live doesn’t detect your device: try another USB cable/port, update Ledger Live, or restart the device. If an app won’t install, ensure there’s enough space on the device and that firmware is compatible. For persistent issues, consult official Ledger support resources.
A passphrase is an optional text string that adds another layer to the seed phrase and can create hidden accounts. Use it only if you fully understand the implications — if you lose the passphrase, you lose access to the hidden accounts.
